The Museum
Welcome to the early years.
This gallery takes you back to the beginning of Peter Bergting’s career, when he was drawing monsters, heroes, mutants, vampires and all sorts of other questionable creatures for the roleplaying and fantasy scene.
Here you’ll find work from some of the games that defined the era: Dungeons & Dragons, Drakar och Demoner, Mutant, Mutant Chronicles, KULT, Vampire, Mage, and Shadowrun.
It was a strange and wonderful time when fantasy, horror, science fiction, illustration and roleplaying were all tangled up together. The artwork ranges from characters and creatures to environments, covers and the occasional image whose main job was simply to make you want to open the book and see what was inside.
Some of this artwork hasn’t been seen for decades. All of the original pieces in this gallery have long since found new homes in private collections, so this is as close as you’re likely to get to rummaging through the old portfolio.
Taken together, the pieces tell the story of where Peter started, the worlds he helped bring to life, and the artists and games that influenced him along the way.
And if you make it all the way to the bottom, you’ll find Peter’s very first published piece of “art”, from Sinkadus magazine.
Early influences
Every artist is shaped by what came before. Peter was no different.
From the futuristic, cinematic worlds of Enki Bilal and Moebius, to the raw energy of underground comics by Peter Laird, and the dark, atmospheric visions of Mike Mignola, J. C. Mezieres, Kelley Jones and Malcolm Jones III - these artists, and many others, left a lasting mark. Too many to mention but here are a couple more: Jordi Bernet, Dave McKean, Paul Bonner, Will Eisner, Tim Bradstreet, Frank Miller, Jack Davies, Sergio Aragones, Mike McMahon, Brian Bolland, Dave Gibbson … The list goes on.
Their ideas, styles and fearlessness helped point the way. You'll see echoes of them throughout this gallery.
